«Artistas en la Colección de Arte Banco Sabadell» (Oviedo)
19.02.2020 - 19.04.2020
Sala de exposiciones Sabadell Herrero. Oviedo
Women artists form a significant part of the Banco Sabadell Art Collection and occupy an increasingly important place in the Spanish and international art world, across all disciplines and artistic languages.
The works by these artists have been selected for their artistic quality and for the importance of their authors within the context of contemporary Spanish art. Together, they form a diverse group of works spanning three generations of artists, from Carmen Laffón to Teresa Solar Abboud.
The exhibition brings together a wide range of attitudes and ideas, as well as different materials and techniques. At the same time, the overall view reveals the continuity of women’s presence in artistic creation at the highest level over more than half a century. It also reflects the diversity of concepts and artistic languages that characterise a context increasingly shaped by undisciplined, interdisciplinary practices and, more generally, by growing complexity.
Sculpture predominates in the exhibition, although drawing, painting, photography and installation are also strongly represented. If one theme stands out, it is memory, which recurs throughout many of the works: time, repetition, dreams, childhood, presence and absence; as well as personal and collective memory, social memory and political memory. Also present are the body — both individual and social — ideas of pressure and transformation, sex, pain and pleasure, sensitivity and resilience. The exhibition furthermore addresses the lived and the real landscape, together with reflection on artistic language itself and on the history of art.
Artistas is an exhibition conceived with the aim of highlighting the importance of women’s contribution to contemporary art and, in a modest way, helping to make visible the still unresolved challenge of gender equality around the world.
