Banco Sabadell holds an important collection of Catalan painting that dates back to the origins of its art collection and which, over time, has been considerably enriched with works by contemporary artists and their immediate predecessors, including Informalism and abstraction. This exhibition aims to present some of the most significant works that form part of the collection’s original core.
From Realism to Noucentisme. The Banco Sabadell Collection begins with Ramon Martí Alsina and Marià Fortuny i Marçal, the foremost representatives in Catalonia of Realism and Orientalism respectively. It continues with their closest contemporaries and followers, including Baldomer Galofre, Tomàs Moragas and Arcadi Mas i Fontdevila. Pantheistic landscape painting, closely associated with Symbolism, is represented by Modest Urgell, the leading artist and pioneer of this tendency among Catalan painters, who achieved a remarkable level of excellence during the final third of the nineteenth century. He is accompanied by Enric Galwey, Lluís Graner, Eliseu Meifrèn and Joaquim Vancells, together with Dionís Baixeras, already associated with a more religious strand of Symbolism promoted by Torras i Bages through the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc. Modernisme is represented by Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol and Hermen Anglada Camarasa and, in its more expressionist dimension, by Joaquim Mir, Isidre Nonell and Francesc Gimeno.
