Banco Sabadell possesses a significant collection of Catalan paintings dating back to the origins of its art collection, which, over time, has grown considerably to include works by contemporary artists and their immediate predecessors, such as the Informalists and abstract artists. The current exhibition aims to showcase precisely some of these significant works that form part of the collection’s original core.
From Realism to Novecentism: The Banco Sabadell Collection begins with Ramon Martí Alsina and Marià Fortuny i Marçal, the leading representatives in Catalonia of Realism and Orientalism, respectively. It continues with their closest colleagues and disciples, such as Baldomer Galofre, Tomàs Moragas, and Arcadi Mas y Fontdevila. Landscape painting of a pantheistic nature, closely related to Symbolism, is represented by Modesto Urgell, the most prominent artist and pioneer of this trend among Catalan painters, who achieved a high level of excellence toward the end of the 19th century. Urgell is joined by Enric Galwey, Lluís Graner, Eliseu Meifrèn, and Joaquim Vancells, along with Dionisio Baixeras, who was already aligned with the more religious form of Symbolism promoted by Torras y Bages through the Santo Lluch Artistic Circle. Painting from the Modernist period is represented by Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Hermen Anglada Camarasa, and, in its most Expressionist form, by Joaquim Mir, Isidre Nonell and Francesc Gimeno.
