The Banco Sabadell Art Collection established its Documentary Photography Collection in 2013. Initially comprising national and international works, much of them previously unseen, the collection was built around projects presented at DOCfield, the festival organised by the Photographic Social Vision Foundation. It has since expanded through the incorporation of award-winning works from the prestigious annual World Press Photo Contest, together with photographs from other sources.
Local is Global, brings together a compelling selection of testimonies from recent history, chosen for their sensitivity and strong social commitment. True to the objectives and values of the best photojournalism, the exhibition explores the common contexts and challenges of humanity on both a local and global scale: migration flows, the effects of climate change, economic and political crises, civil protests, bodies as sites of conflict as well as identity affirmation.
In a world increasingly saturated with images, this collection highlights the rigour and responsibility with which photographers carry out their work, as well as their talent and ability to renew visual storytelling, which are so necessary to encourage the creation of emotional and intellectual connections between the audience and the documented realities. The exhibition invites us to cross borders, to recognise ourselves in others and to step into their shoes, to bear witness, without filters, to the complex journey humanity is navigatingthrough which we travel as humanity, with the clear objective of stimulating our senses, enriching our understanding and strengthening our critical thinking.
