Sabadell Art Museum. Sabadell

The exhibition Order and Disorder in the World brings into dialogue for the first time two of the city’s most significant art collections: the Sabadell Art Museum collection, made up primarily of works by artists from the local context; and the Banco Sabadell Art Collection, which includes not only works by prominent artists born in Sabadell but also works by artists from national and international contexts.

Order and Disorder in the World presents an extensive selection of modern and contemporary artworks from the Banco Sabadell Art Collection and the Sabadell Art Museum collection, highlighting how art has engaged with the human desire to know, interpret, and define sensible reality, and how, at the same time, it has sought to question, subvert, surpass, and reinvent the principles of organisation and systematization through which different academic disciplines have attempted to generate knowledge about the world and existence.

Modern art represented a break with traditional Western views and offered a transformative vision of reality, as well as of its most intimate and invisible manifestations, expanding the scope of what can be represented. Contemporary art has integrated and extended this disruptive impulse: the drive to unsettle and destabilise the stable and functional categories through which hegemonic forces so often attempt to define the world and existence.

The exhibition invites us to engage with these dynamics and to consider how artists, through their practice, have approached essential concepts and ideas of human knowledge and experience, such as nothingness, matter, origin, existence, nature, landscape, creation, and destruction.

The selection of works also emphasizes the nature of the relationship that art establishes with reality and prompts reflection on the meaning and value of representation, imagination and creation. It also explores the relationship between artistic creativity and erotic desire, understood as a creative force that destabilises and disorders the established.

Order and Disorder in the World invites us to understand art as creative destruction, and as a creation that destroys.
