The DKV Collection and the Banco Sabadell Collection have joined forces to present a selection of contemporary artworks brought together through the relationship between two disciplines: sculpture and drawing.
While sculpture was long regarded as a solid and precise artistic language, in which structure and material largely determined the final outcome of the work and demanded specialised technical skills from the artist, drawing represented the opposite: it was valued for the freshness and freedom of a line that could not easily be accommodated within a work of greater scale.
But the situation has changed and we now find ourselves in a new landscape. One might say that today artists sculpt, if the term still applies, as they draw, and draw as they sculpt. Sculpture is now defined chiefly by its three-dimensionality and its relationship with space, offering, beyond this basic definition, a wide range of formal and conceptual possibilities. Drawing, once relegated to a secondary role, now operates as an autonomous art form, with a broader and freer range of possibilities than those offered by painting, a medium more constrained by its historical legacy.
This exhibition clearly illustrates the disappearance of the boundaries between these disciplines and the growing convergence between them in terms of artistic value and significance.
