The artist’s book emerged in the second half of the 20th century, specifically in 1963, when Edward Ruscha produced the first edition of *Twenty-six Gasoline Stations*. From that point on, the most avant-garde artists decided to use the book as a tool to break with previous art forms, despite the paradox that it is a traditional medium of artistic expression.
The enduring legacy of this tradition is what ensures that, even now in the 21st century, the book remains highly relevant. This stands in contrast to those who, twenty years ago, predicted its demise due to the advent of new digital platforms for text and images, which, according to them, would inevitably lead to its disappearance. Perhaps, as Michel Butor stated in 1987, “The only books that will interest us in the future are those that can be considered works of art.”
This exhibition brings together exemplary works from the past decade, particularly from the last five years. From artists such as Jaume Plensa, Perejaume, Antón Lamazares, Jose Pedro Croft, Joan Fontcuberta, Eulàlia Valldosera, Hannah Collins, and Lawrence Weiner, among others, to numerous young creators such as Regina Giménez, Cristina de Middel, and Jordi Mitjà, who dedicate a significant portion of their work to publishing. Much of this work is published in the format of photobooks, drawn from the Banco Sabadell and Arts Libris collections.
