«L’arrel de l’arbre és una roda» by Perejaume at the Estudi General Lul·lià in Palma

The Estudi General Lul·lià, coinciding with the festivity of the Blessed Ramon Llull, exhibits Perejaume’s L’arrel de l’arbre és una roda at its headquarters in Palma from 27 November 2023 to 27 February 2024. It is the first time that this work of art, which belongs to the Banco Sabadell Art Collection, is exhibited.

The Estudi was created in 1951 with the aim of promoting culture in Majorca and disseminating the work of Ramon Llull. One of the projects of the Estudi is the Llull Lab, a space for experimentation that focuses on the many interconnections between the most current art forms and sciences, and the line of thought of Ramon Llull.

At this space, the artist exhibits the installation La raïl de l’arbre és una roda, based on the image of the Lullian tree as a real mechanical metaphor. These eight words from Ramon Llull are featured in the book Començament de medicina. The syntax of Llull’s entire work is truly forestry-like, because of both the repeated figure of the tree with which the various forms of knowledge are rooted and the way in which all kinds of connections and analogical demonstrations are linked together.

Perejaume showcases at the cloister of the Estudi General Lul·lià an oak tree that dances to the sound of chants, in four-part harmony, of fragments from four of Llull’s books (Llibre de Gentil, Començament de medicina, Arbre exemplifical and Arbre de la ciència) selected by Perejaume himself, with music by Jaume Ayats from traditional polyphonies (Sant Gil, Miserere d’Àger, Goigs de la Mare de Déu del Roser and Salm: In exitu Israel, segons els cantadors del Pallars Sobirà).

Every day, from Monday to Friday, there will be two oak dances, at 12 noon and 5 p.m. Each session lasts around twenty minutes.

Cada día, de lunes a viernes, se llevarán a cabo dos bailes de la encina, a las 12 del mediodía y a las 5 de la tarde. Cada sesión tiene una duración de unos veinte minutos.
