Five artworks by Manuel Medina Díez, Evaristo Valle, Nicanor Piñole and Mariano Moré, from the Banco Sabadell Art Collection, form part of the exhibition “Mother Asturias: from Black Spain to the Avant-Garde”, which is open to visitors at the Sabadell-Herrero Exhibition Space from 4 June to 30 September 2026.
The exhibition is the third and latest in a series of exhibitions mounted at the aforesaid gallery, inviting viewers to reflect on the origin and identity of Asturian art.
The exhibition focuses on figurative art and the representation of the human form in works associated with Asturias, exploring the origins of this oeuvre and its spontaneous shift to expressionist styles. This development is explained by the consolidation of Expressionism, at the end of the 19th century, as one of the defining features of Spanish art and, by extension, Asturian art.
The artworks allow viewers to appreciate the aesthetic process which, from the mid-19th century onwards, shaped the modernisation of art in communities such as Asturias which, despite being geographically removed from the artistic centres of the time, was still able to forge its own path towards modernity – one that has generally received little academic attention or recognition.
